Hunt: Showdown review

NBSR – No Bull-Shit Review.
Reviews that are short, sweet and to the point.
Hunt: Showdown is a competitive first-person survival horror game that throws you into an unforgiving world, filled with a plethora of nightmarish creatures that will show you absolutely no mercy if you fail to put them down for good. Not only that but other hunters who are out to claim the very same bounty in which you are hunting down will stop at nothing to claim it for themselves given the opportunity. It’s a question of who’ll slay the beast first and who’ll make it out alive in the end.
I hadn’t even got through the tutorial of the game yet and it had me on edge, being overly cautious of every move I made and in fear of making even the slightest noise that could alert any potential enemies that were around me. Initially, there were many times in which I found myself just running into areas, foolishly breaking my way through windows and trying to have the whole guns blazing approach. I quickly learned that this wasn’t such a good idea when I kept finding myself being pummeled by monsters who were hiding in the dark corners of rooms, barns and the likes waiting for me to drop my guard. Even in times when I felt that the coast was clear, I’d find myself jumping off my seat minutes later when I rush a room to find a group of enemies quickly surround me.
Hunt: Showdown forces you to play smart, the whole guns blazing approach didn’t quite work for me, but neither did spending too long in the wide-open plotting out every move due to my nerves getting the best of me. You don’t always have that luxury to hesitate, sometimes you do just have to make that move, even when the fear of doing so is telling you not to. It makes the game incredibly interesting, you are required to tread carefully, but also be able to react quickly when needs must. You could find yourself being surrounded by a group of enemies, with little ammo left to finish the entire swarm off and then the next thing you know, another group of hunters could swoop in to take them out. Granting you an opportunity to escape, gather resources and better prepare yourself once more. That also means that other players may be doing the exact same as you, letting you clear out a swarm of enemies that are surrounding a clue so that they can swoop in and finish you off after all your hard works been put in.
This clever mix of PVP and PVE only adds to the intensity of the game, not only do you have to constantly monitor your surroundings to avoid being slain by whatever lurks around you, but even after a successful hunt, you’ll still have to fend off the remaining hunters who want nothing but to reap the rewards of your labour. Although it’s not to say that every single encounter with another player means that you’ll be thrown into a duel, you may occasionally encounter other players who may provide assistance by putting the final bullet into a targets skull for you in the very last second, but just because they helped you now, doesn’t mean they won’t think twice about plunging a knife into your back to steal your bounty at the last second.
On the Xbox One X, I noticed some issues with textures not loading correctly, or at all. Vegetation and the likes going out of control randomly, which was honestly more funny than annoying to be honest and the game occasionally struggling to perform during hectic moments of gunplay and some other minor aesthetic issues. None of which ruined the experience for me and were only minor annoyances.
Overall, the positive factors of the game outweigh the negatives and I thoroughly enjoyed playing Hunt: Showdown and I can’t wait to dig even deeper into it once the game releases tomorrow and brings in even more hunters to the chaos. Granted there is room for things to be polished, but regardless the game is an absolute thrill to play and I wouldn’t let minor issues dishearten you from picking this up. Even with the time I have put in so far, I still feel like I am only scratching the surface of what this game has to offer.

If you’re looking for a game that’s guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, then Hunt: Showdown will not disappoint you. The mix of PVP and PVE creates an intense experience that will leave you longing for more. Although there are some minor issues on the Xbox One, regarding textures and performance, it doesn’t hinder the overall experience at all.
