Sonic Forces Reveal, formerly known as Project Sonic 2017

We already briefly touched on Sonic Forces in our previous Sonic Mania article, but I just had to get my thoughts out there on Sonic Forces!

Sega revealed the first proper Gameplay footage of their new project “Sonic Forces”… and this looks like the type of game that I’m interested in. Don’t get me wrong, Sonic Mania looks excellent and it has quite a lot going for it, but to see a Sonic Game that looks this nice, based on the Modern 3D Sonic design and not the god awful Sonic Boom design is something to behold.

I’m a massive fan of the Sonic franchise and as a gamer, the modern Sonic games (mostly the adventure series) have always held a special place in my heart, those were some of my favourite games that I used to play back in my teens. When Sonic Boom was revealed I was initially excited to see what would come from the team’s new direction with the series beloved mascot, but we all know how that went and seeing something like this rise from the ashes that is Sonic Boom, I feel pleasantly surprised. That’s not to say that the Sonic Boom series of games is done and dusted, but I’m glad to see that they haven’t called it a day for the original design and are working on something that’s more true to the Unleashed / Sonic Colours style of gameplay.

From what we know at the moment, Sonic Forces will follow a similar style of gameplay in which Sonic Generations kicked off, meaning that the game will consist of both the Classic and Modern Sonic character variants. This was originally revealed in the first teaser trailer of Sonic Forces in which you saw the Death Egg robots lay waste to the city, with our heroes making their way to try and stop them, albeit brief, it definitely got fans talking and I for one was pretty excited.

 

First Modern Sonic Gameplay

I think this type of approach is quite neat as the Sonic Generations formula was quite nice and it definitely mixed up the gameplay to bring a fresh and new experience to the table, giving both fans of the classic and modern style games a bit of what they loved most. Although I personally felt Sonic Generations didn’t quite meet my expectations and had so much more potential to it, it was still a solid entry into the franchise. I just hope that Sonic Forces exceeds my expectations this time and lives up to the potential that Sonic Generations had and more because there is so much that can be done with a game like this!

So far from what we have seen, Sonic Forces looks like it will be quite interesting and we will be sure to keep you posted of the latest updates as they arrive.
